Five-star Lichfield City FC too strong for Pilkington XXX

Lichfield City FC celebrated their team of the month award with a five star performance against Pilkington XXX.

Both sides had early half-chances, but it was the home side who went closest to opening the scoring when David Yonwin thundered a 30-yarder against the post.

Gavin Hurren was a whisker over the bar, before Tony Clarke nodded one just wide.

But Clarke made amends just after the half-hour as he gave City the lead.

Just two minutes later it was 2-0 as Yonwin found the net.

Rampant Lichfield had time to make it 3-0 before the break thanks to a Jeorge Smith effort.

The biggest threat to City’s dominance appeared to be Lichfield’s recent power outages as a floodlight failure struck early in the second period.

Pilkington might have wished the lights had stayed off when they were reduced to ten men after a second yellow card.

Smith went close to doubling his tally before Yonwin did just that on 76 minutes.

The hat-trick duly arrived for Yonwin five minutes from time as Lichfield ensured a late strike for the visitors was nothing more than a consolation.

The result leaves Gary Birch’s men third in the table and level on points with second placed Nuneaton Griff with a game in hand. Next up for City is a trip to mid-table Coventry Copsewood next weekend (December 12).
