Battling Burntwood RUFC beaten at Newcastle

Waterlogged pitches at Burntwood RUFC saw their fixture with Newcastle relocated to the Potteries, meaning Ben Holt’s side were on the road for the third week running against a team in contention for promotion.

Fortunately, they turned in a much-improved performance after their trouncing at Ludlow. They returned without any league points but the scoreline was not a fair reflection of the game. Newcastle only pulled clear with 14 points in the last 15 minutes.

Aza Dunet was in good place kicking form but each time he landed a penalty goal, the hosts responded with a converted try, two of them coming from Burntwood errors. One was a missed pass between the half backs and another came from an overthrown line out.

The line outs were untidy due to the weather conditions but the Burntwood scrum, with Jake Ranson back in the front row after long term injury, went well as did their defence in general.

Craig Seedhouse showed good control from outside half until he went off injured in the second period. Rob Jones also impressed when he moved from wing to full back in the second half reshuffle.

The seconds also lost out at Newcastle in their merit table game and the colts lost out on a game altogether on Sunday due to Telford Hornets recently dropping out of the league.

Burntwood go into the Christmas break with another away trip and their task doesn’t get any easier as they travel to face table-toppers Tamworth. The 2nds host Tamworth 2nds for a merit table game.
