Doctors urge Lichfield and Burntwood residents to know their options if they become ill over Christmas

People are being urged to understand their options if they become ill over the festive period.

Dr Raju Valasapalli from Staffordshire Doctors Urgent Care – which provides GP-led out of ours cover – said people with a non-life threatening injury should use the most appropriate service.

“The NHS 111 service is a non-emergency free helpline, available 24/7, 365 days a year,” he said. “On calling, your symptoms will be assessed and you will be advised on how to proceed, whether to A&E, an out-of-hours doctor, an urgent care centre or a walk-in centre, a community nurse, an emergency dentist or a late-opening chemist.

“Patients can also book appointment at out-of-hours centres by calling 111. These are open evenings, weekends and bank holidays and are run by GPs and nurse practitioners.

“But if at any time you feel your injuries or illness could be life-threatening, call 999.
