A final attempt to derail HS2 has been launched.

The Government has tabled the final stage of the HS2 Bill which could pass by the end of March.

But Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant has has put forward a formal amendment which would annul the Bill if it is passed:

That this House, while recognising the constantly increasing need for additional rail line capacity to relieve congestion on the West Coast Main Line and to improve connectivity between major cities and with London, and while recognising the valuable work of the Select Committee in making improvements to the route of the railway line, declines to give the High Speed Rail (London – West Midlands) Bill a Third Reading because the line as set forth in the Bill, as amended following its committee stages, has insufficient station provision to connect adequately with other modes of transport, fails to connect directly with HS1 and the Channel Tunnel, is the subject of a Select Committee direction and a Government assurance that no provision for a direct link to Heathrow will be made as part of HS2 Phases One or Two, provides inadequate compensation to those blighted by the route and to those whose property is subject to compulsory purchase, and inflicts unnecessary environmental damage, including to wildlife habitats, ancient woodland and waterways.

The amendment will need support from a number of MPs of all political persuasions.

Mr Fabricant said: “Unless Labour and the SNP can be persuaded to vote against the Government along with Conservative rebels like me on Third Reading and inflict a defeat as they did on Sunday Trading, this legislation will pass by the end of the month.

“This amendment, if passed, would in effect annul the legislation.

“I have done it in this way because I do not oppose HS2 on principle and I recognise its benefits to Birmingham. However, its execution is clumsy and expensive. By not using existing transport corridors such as routing alongside motorways and existing rail lines, it is damaging to the environment and more expensive – by at least £8 billion – than it need be due to the extra tunelling required.

“But it’s even worse than that. HS2 won’t connect with the Channel Tunnel and the continent or even major airports like Heathrow. Travelling to Paris from Birmingham, far from getting on the train and waking up in Paris as we had originally been promised, commuters will face a trek across London with their bags from Euston station to St Pancras station to board another train.

“In future people will look back at this project and say ‘This was no way to design a railway’.”

I remember cramming into the hall on Boley Park when this idea came to fruition. Our beloved Mr Fabricant promised tooth and nail to fight against the proposal. Within a couple of days he did a complete 180 degree turn and supported the proposal. If HS2 stopped at Lichfield this would benefit Lichfield, bring in more jobs etc. etc. As it doesn’t, Mr Fabricant should represent Lichfield. He will not get my vote next time, I have lost confidence in him.

He also used his supposed anti-HS2 stance as an effective election campaign tool. His words locally have never been matched by his actions in Westminster.

How many times does El Fabbo have to go back on his promises before people will realise that he’s all talk during an election campaign? As soon as he gets to his office in Westminster he’s 100% back to Conservative policies, he’s *never* been ‘all about Lichfield’ as he so often chirps when he’s on the voter trail.
People say ‘ooh I love Fabricant, he’s great for Lichfield’ – but I’ve seen very little evidence of that, the only time I see him is when he’s popped up at some ribbon-cutting event and gets his mug splashed in the Mercury. Do you think he actually put any time into helping to build that community hub? Or got on the treadmill to ride 1000 miles in the name of a children’s cancer charity? Like hell he has. He’s a famous face people pull out when they need attention to their otherwise very good cause.
I can’t remember the last time Fabricant did something useful.

He thinks he can fool most of his constituents most of the time and maybe he does. I am glad to see these commentators (including me) aren’t fooled any of the time.
