The historic building carried out the work after being awarded money from the Government’s First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund.

Lichfield received the largest of the grants – £800,000 – to fund the rewiring of the building and improvements to its lighting.

A spokesperson said: “The fund was set up to support vital repairs to some of England’s most important historic buildings.

“Lichfield Cathedral was facing the possibility of closure without the essential work.”

The new lighting will be used for the first time after Evensong at 6.20pm today (March 17).

Hopefully this means it will be lit up from the outside at night. Its such a shame its not lit all the time. Every city I’ve been to in Europe have their cathedrals lit and with the LED low energy tech thats available now I can’t see why our’s is not.

They currently charge £36 an hour to light up the cathedral for special celebrations, so I’m sure they’re not in a hurry to perma-light the exterior when there’s a steady income from the public.

£800,000 for lights, it should look like Blackpool illuminations with a laser show thrown in for that, maybe even light up all 5 spires in the city at the same time with an epic laser battle between them, like a Dalek firefight, something tasteful and in character with the City to draw the punters in.

These plans are all well and good, but fail to address the fundamental question – will these lights mean it will be possible to see Lichfield from space (where God lives)?

The Church of England Church Commissioners manage £5.2bn of Church assets yet constantly plead poverty and now rely on grants to rewire it’s buildings.
And St Mary’s is at risk without local authority support by moving in the City library.
Institutionalised religion, what a joke on all levels.

Why not move the library into the cathedral? I’m sure there’s room for the average Sunday congregation in St Mary’s. Then use the money from the Friary sell-off to buy Fabricant, all councillors and members of the Lichfield Diocese some actual blinkers so they can avoid seeing the real problems facing the city. Win-win-win!
