Lichfield City go behind against Coventry United

For the second time in a week Lichfield City FC failed to hold onto their lead.

Midland Football League Division One title hopefuls Coventry United came from behind to beat Gary Birch’s men 2-1, just days after City had picked up a point at Pilkington XXX after failing to hold on to a two-goal advantage.

It was the table toppers who started brightest, with Lichfield goalkeeper Conor McCarthy pulling off two early saves to keep the scores level.

Lewis Bourne had City’s only chance of note in the first half as he sent a chance over the bar.

The second half started as the first had with McCarthy called into action to keep Coventry out.

But it was Lichfield who eventually broke the deadlock when Tyron Smith netted midway through the second period.

A controversial equaliser came straight from the kick-off. With a number of City players still coming back from their celebrations, Coventry took the kick off and broke quickly. Joshua O’Grady went through on goal and slipped in Kai Williams to fire into an empty net.

The nature of the goal seemed to take the wind out of Lichfield’s sails and the visitors completed the turnaround with ten minutes to go when Williams steered the ball home.

Lichfield now lie sixth in the table with just two league games left – home to Cadbury Athletic on April 23 and away at Racing Club Warwick on April 30.
