New radios for use by businesses are being introduced to help cut crime and anti-social behaviour in the city centre.

The digital handsets have been purchased by the Lichfield Business Improvement District (BID) and will link pubs and shops to each other, the police and the CCTV control room.

Funding has also been provided for a new Business Exclusion Scheme which allows local companies to access intelligence and ban individuals from their premises.

Paul Maddox, chairman of Lichfield BID, said: “One of our main objectives is to enhance Lichfield’s reputation as a fun and safe destination both day and night.

“We are delighted to be able to fund the upgrade and expansion of the radio network and Business Exclusion Scheme, to give even more businesses in the city the access to work together and keep Lichfield safe.

“The BID is also proud to be introducing the brand new initiative of City Guardians, providing that physical presence on our streets, which will help to reduce crime and the fear of crime for our visitors.”

The new City Guardians will patrol the city centre during evenings and events, such as the Lichfield Food Festival. They will also help to control taxi ranks in the evening.

Morag Pringle, city centre manager for the BID, said: “While Lichfield already boasts a very low crime rate compared to many other towns and cities in the region, we are keen to keep it that way.

“We want Lichfield to be the first choice for people to visit, day and night, confident that they can enjoy themselves free from the fear of becoming a victim of crime or anti-social behaviour.

“I am certain that these new projects will go a long way to achieving this and we will see Lichfield continue to thrive over the coming years.”
