Princes Park in Burntwood

A record-breaking Burntwood park is hoping to team up with a former rival.

Princes Park was previously thought to hold the title of world’s smallest, until a rival in Portland, Oregon laid claim to the title.

The news led to the Mill Ends Park being branded “a glorified flowerpot” – but the Americans even installed fencing in a bid to claim the crown.

But as Princes Park prepares to host the World’s Smallest Fun Run on May 2, the two sides have called a truce – and now Burntwood hopes its old rival will become a founder member of the Global Association of Small Parks (GASP).

Cllr Andy Smith said: “We are delighted to be helping to set up GASP so that our gem of a park can get the recognition that it deserves.

“In Lichfield district we are rightly proud of our wonderful parks and it is great to see fun activities being organised to get people involved.

“I would like to offer a hand of friendship to the people of Portland, Oregon and congratulate them on their lovely little park.”

The World’s Shortest Fun Run will start at 10.30am at the park on Farewell Lane. Runners are expected to complete the course in just 55 strides.

Kevin Wilson, of KP Events, said: “This was a really good fun event when it took place in 2013 and I’d like to invite everyone to join in, young and old.

“At 55 steps, most people should be able to complete it in under a minute.

“We will be setting off runners all day, so why not come over and join the fun? Fancy dress is optional.

People can register online or on the day. Entry is £5 with money raised going to the We Love Lichfield Fund.
