Competitors brave the elements as thousands take part in 2016 Staffordshire Ironman race

Competitors and spectators didn’t let the wet weather dampen their spirits as the Ironman race visited Lichfield and Burntwood.

Athletes took on a swim at Chasewater, a cycle through a number of villages before finishing with a run at Shugborough.

Professional duo Matt Trautman and defending champion Lucy Gossage took the honours in the men and women’s races which included a field of more than 2,000 local, national and international athletes.

County Councillor Mark Winnington, Cabinet member for economic growth handed out medals to finishers.  He said: “It’s been a fantastic day, and it’s great to see so many local communities come out to support the athletes despite the wet weather.

“Everyone has been getting into the spirit of the event and giving competitors that much needed boost as they reach the finish line.

“Well done to everyone who took part this year, and we look toward to welcoming Ironman to Staffordshire again next year.”
