Still time for women to sign up for 2016 St Giles Hospice Solstice Walk

Women are being urged to make the tenth anniversary of the St Giles Hospice Solstice Walk a night to remember.

The night-time walk through the streets of Lichfield takes place on Saturday (June 18).

Roz McGann took part in the first two Solstice Walks in 2007 and 2008, entering a team called Tim’s Angels in memory of her late husband.

“It’s always a great atmosphere,” she said. “We had about 15 friends and family in our team for each of the two years we did it and we ended up raising a total of about £5,000.

“Since then it’s grown and grown, especially with the fairy theme, and there’s always a fantastic party atmosphere. It’s a great girl’s night out – but without the drinking! Although you can always have a drink afterwards!”

Many of those taking part will have their own personal reasons for participating.

For Roz, from Handsacre, it was a chance to give something back to the Whittington-based charity which cared for Tim towards the end of his life following a diagnosis with asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma.

“He was looked after by the St Giles community nursing team,” Roz explained. “They made sure he was comfortable, checked his medication, sorted his prescriptions and looked after his general wellbeing.

“The help was definitely important, we noticed a real difference in him, and it was lovely for him to always have someone to talk to.

“After Tim passed away I worked for the hospice part-time for a while helping on the fundraising administration side, so I know how important the Solstice Walk is to St Giles. It’s one of their biggest events and a magical night under the stars.

“I hope everyone taking part this year has great fun raising money for such a vital charity.”

The 2016 St Giles Hospice Solstice Walk starts and ends at the Friary Grange Leisure Centre. The evening will begin with a sunset party from 7.30pm, before the walk starts at 10pm.

Participants can choose between the full nine-mile walk (two laps of the course) or stick to a single lap of 4.5 miles.

Entry is £15 per walker and the event is open to women aged 16 and over.
