A cemetery in Burntwood could ditch plans for a mausoleum on the site if the go-ahead is given for a crematorium instead.

The owners of the Chase & District Memorial Park on Burntwood Way have applied to Lichfield District Council for planning permission.

A application for a cremator on the site had previously been approved before being quashed by a judicial review.

Permission was then refused for a mausoleum before being overturned on appeal.

A statement supporting the latest crematorium plan said locals would need to accept some form of development.

“It is understood through liaison with the local community that [the mausoleum] is not all together welcomed,” it said.

“The alternative proposals have been carefully developd to not only fulfil the client’s brief but also consider the concerns of the local community surrounding this site and its previous proposed use.

“It should however be noted that for financial reasons the site owners must develop this site, and if for whatever reason the submission is refused then serious consideration will have to be given to the implementation of the currently approved mausoleum scheme.”

Full details of the new proposals can be seen on Lichfield District Council’s planning website.
