The FA Cup

A superb second half comeback saw Lichfield City FC progress in the FA Cup.

Dave Langston’s men will now go forward to face the winners of the Shawbury United and Coventry United replay tomorrow night (August 10).

Lichfield had the better of the opening exchanges against Wolverhampton Casuals with Craig Marshall and Luke Chapman trying their luck from distance.

Marshall thought he’d done enough to break the deadlock, only to see a fine save deny him.

But despite dominating the opening exchanges City had only themselves to blame after going behind. Joe Clarke’s backpass somehow found its way past keeper Amrick Virdee and into the net.

Despite being behind at the break, Lichfield came out for the second period brightly with Marshall again going close.

Virdee was forced to make a good save as Casuals posed a threat at the other end as both sides recognised the next goal would be crucial – and luckily for Lichfield it was to go to them as Marshall finally made one of his chances pay.

City had a penalty shout waved away with the game seemingly heading towards extra time.

But defender Clarke went from villain to hero with a volleyed finish to send Lichfield through to an FA Cup preliminary round tie on August 20.
