Lichfield City FC sent themselves top of the Midland Football League Division One after a 5-0 demolition of Southam United.

They went into the game level on points with Bromsgrove Sporting who were not in action.

And City took full advantage to put down a real statement of intent for the season ahead.

Despite the eventual scoreline, Lichfield were slow to get going and were indebted to keeper James Fryer for an early save which kept them level.

But Dave Langston’s men gradually got going with Daniel Griffiths and Dan Thurstance having efforts at goal.

The breakthrough eventually came when Ben Lund rifled home. He should have had his second shortly afterwards but nodded over the top.

Thurstance did make it 2-0 from further out though as he fired past the Southam keeper from 20 yards.

Lichfield appeared to have discovered their scoring boots when Lund hit the post and Kieron Mortiboys was on hand to convert.

Ruthless City weren’t done yet for the first half either as Lund bagged his second and his side’s fourth after good work from Jordan Evans.

Lund almost got his hat-trick early in the second half but was denied by a fine save.

The scoring was rounded off when Thurstance laid on a chance for Griffiths who made no mistake.
