Shoppers are being urged to have a say on which local good causes will pick up a share of £30,000.

The money has been raised by the introduction of charging for carrier bags.

Voting will start on October 31 in the city’s main Tesco store with three groups bidding to collect either £12,000, £10,000 or £8,000:

  • COGS Prepares 4 Life
  • Lichfield City Council
  • Woodhouse Farm and Garden CIC

Customers will be able to cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

Lindsey Crompton, head of community at Tesco, said: “The first round of the Bags of Help initiative was a fantastic success. In total 1,170 community groups across the country were awarded £8,000, £10,000 or £12,000 – that’s a massive £11.7 million being invested into local projects.

“We are already seeing some great results from groups transforming their own environmental and greenspace areas.

“We are absolutely delighted to be opening voting for round two and we hope that even more customers will choose to support groups that mean a lot to them and to their communities this time around.

“There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see them come to life with Bags of Help grants.”

You couldn’t exactly say a council is a “good cause”. It is a statutory organisation with powers to levy tax. I’m not sure why it is included in this, or what they intend to spend the money on.

Would love to see the council get this.

They could get some new gold chains, a bigger car or maybe commission another pointless report.

Or maybe get a friend in, as a consultant for a couple of weeks.

Put solar panels on our public buildings….oh wait a minute. We’ve sold them!
