Lichfield City FC were knocked out of the Staffs Senior County Cup on penalties after a fiery encounter with Uttoxeter Town.

Dave Langston’s men had their fair share of an even opening half until they went behind after a free-kick wasn’t fully cleared and Harry Price bundled the ball home.

The goal sparked City into life and they saw a header cleared off the line before Ben Lund fired a ball across the box but no-one could get the decisive touch.

Keeper Amrick Virdee was pleased to see a Uttoxeter effort flash just wide of his upright in the second half as Lichfield struggled to find their feet.

But they did manage to find a way back into the game as Jordan Evans managed to finish after being sent through by a neat through ball.

Evans almost bagged his second when he saw a header whistle over the bar.

As tensions began to rise so did the temperature with a number of free-kicks awarded and both sets of players becoming embroiled in a number of flashpoints as the game threatened to boil over.

But with neither side able to add to the scoreline, the game went straight to penalties.

Lichfield took the early advantage in the shootout with Luke Chapman and Richard Deavall finding the target while Virdee was in fine form to deny a couple of Uttoxeter’s early takers.

But City’s hopes began to unravel as Dan Thurstance and Dan Griffiths both saw their efforts saved before Dan McLeod managed to send his effort wide.

Virdee did his best to salvage his side’s chances, saving from Uttoxeter when they had a chance to wrap the game up.

But when Jordan Hunt’s penalty was stopped by the Town keeper, Uttoxeter made no mistake to secure their spot in the next round.
