Chasetown FC secured their place in the next round of the league cup with a thumping win over Kidsgrove Athletic.

jack-langston-scoresThe Scholars took a dramatic lead after just four minutes. A Rhys Thompson cross somehow deceived keeper Harry Pickering as looped into the net.

Pickering then made amends with a double save to deny James Dance from long range and then the follow up from Mitch Piggon.

Chasetown keeper Curtis Pond was called into action in the 20th minute saving low to his left from Chris Birchall.

The Scholars had the ball in the net again on the half hour as Thompson’s cross was headed across by Pierce Kiembi and Piggon headed home from an offside position.

But the second goal did come when Jack Langston capitalised on a ball that ricocheted into his path to side foot past Pickering from 12 yards.

And Langston made it 3-0 at the start of the second half with a sumptuous volley from 25 yards that left Pickering stranded.

Kidsgrove pulled a goal back with a John Johnston effort which beat Pond low to his right after the Chasetown keeper had made several top saves.

But Chasetown restored their advantage After Charles Weston-Hayles was tripped on the edge of the area. Langston took the free kick and fired an unstoppable kick into the roof of the net to complete his second hat-trick of the season.

Weston-Hayles beat the offside trap to slide home the fifth as Chasetown confidently booked their place in the next round.
