Joe Thomas inspires Chasetown FC to victory over Basford United

The Scholars took the lead after 20 minutes when Thomas superbly picked out debutant Jamie Sheldon who took the ball on his chest and lobbed goalkeeper Jake Wood.

Thomas had a storming first half and struck the crossbar on the half hour and Jack Langston followed up from eight yards to fire home the rebound.

Basford immediately reduced the deficit through Kieran Wells after a defensive slip in midfield.

Thomas scored a sensational third goal at the start of the second half. Bursting through the last line of defence he smashed the ball past Wood who got a touch but couldn’t keep it out.

Thomas added his second goal to cap a wonderful personal performance from the young new signing.

Basford reduced the deficit again after Chasetown conceded a penalty which Fabian Smith despatched straight down the middle.
