Parents in Lichfield and Burntwood should look to the Liberal Democrats to safeguard school spending after the 2017 General Election, one of the party’s former county council candidates has claimed.

Alasdair Brooks finished third in the Lichfield Rural South ward in the recent elections.

The party will field Paul Ray once again in the General Election and Mr Brooks believes voters will see through Conservative promises over funding for schools.

“I’m sure that most residents of Burntwood and Lichfield will join me in opposing the Government’s education spending plans,” he said. “While this increasingly radical Tory government claims to be boosting funding for schools, this is misleading.

“The amount set aside to increase spending is failing to match the increase in pupils, which means the amount spent per pupil falls despite the inadequate overall funding increase.”

Mr Brooks said that the Liberal Democrats would invest an additional £36.7million in schools and colleges in Staffordshire if they were elected to Government.

He said: “This funding for Staffordshire would protect per pupil funding in real terms, reverse cuts to frontline school and college budgets, and ensure no school loses out from changes to funding arrangements.

“More than £5million of the funding would be spent on protecting the Pupil Premium, introduced by the Liberal Democrats to help the most disadvantaged children.

“A landslide for the Conservatives would allow Theresa May to continue to take parents across the country for granted and cut our schools to the bone. Only the Liberal Democrats can provide the strong opposition Britain needs to stand up for Lichfield and Burntwood.”
