Lichfield and Burntwood candidate Paul Ray says future is looking bright for Lib Dems

The future is looking much brighter for the Liberal Democrats, the party’s candidate in Lichfield and Burntwood has claimed.

Paul Ray came third with 2,653 votes behind the Conservatives and Labour.

He said the result was “good but not spectacular” but added that the national picture had made him optimistic for the future.

“During the campaign I had the opportunity to set out the key and distinctive policies of the Lib Dems,” Mr Ray said. “These were really well received on the doorstep and I would like to thank all those who voted for me.

“I got a good but not spectacular result with 5% of the vote, but it was well above the national Lib Dem performance for a safe Conservative seat like Lichfield.

“As a local party we’ve done ourselves so proud and I would like to thank all those who supported me and worked so hard for me during the campaign.

“And the future now looks much brighter for the Lib Dems compared to the previous Parliament. It was so sad to lose some great MPs in particular Nick Clegg but we’ve got Jo Swinson, Ed Davey and Vince Cable back and some vibrant new faces. In the new Parliament we have 50% more MPs and they will be making a real difference.

“Our health policies (1p in the pound on income tax ring-fenced for the NHS and social care services and a key focus on mental health) went down really well. Norman Lamb is our spokesman on health and he speaks with enormous passion and sense on this issue and is very well respected across the health sector. I was so pleased to see Norman Lamb re-elected.”

Mr Ray also believes the electorate has fired a warning shot across the bows of the Conservatives.

“Above all, the Conservatives’ hard Brexit has been rejected and we as a party played a fundamental role here in exposing the dangers of these extreme plans.

“I feel very positive about the role the Lib Dems will be playing in the future locally and nationally.”
