The 1830 artwork was painted by JMW Turner and depicts the iconic three spires above Minster Pool.

It had been in private collections since his death in 1851, until being left as a legacy to the cathedral last year.

Proceeds from the sale – which was held at Sotheby’s in London – will go towards the upkeep and maintenance of the building.

The Very Reverend Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield Cathedral, adds: “To receive such an extraordinary legacy is something that happens only once in a lifetime.

“Our donor’s generosity has not only helped us meet the ongoing challenges of securing this unique historic cathedral for the next generation, but has also seen us welcome 20,000 visitors to the city to see our temporary exhibition Mr Turner Comes to Lichfield.

“We hope the new owners will enjoy this beautiful painting every bit as much as we have.”

Surprised Fab hasn’t claimed, he drove Turner to the cathedral, to paint it.
