Hat-trick sees Chasetown FC beaten by Walsall in latest pre-season fixture

A quickfire Mitch Candlin hat-trick helped Walsall see-off the challenge of Chasetown FC.

The Scholars started brightly, rattling the angle of crossbar after ten minutes with a right foot Clayton Johnson effort.

But the League One visitors took the lead in the 23rd as Tobias Hayles-Docherty let fly from the wide right edge of the area beyond Dale Reaney.

The hosts almost levelled when Chris Baker chipped the ball to the far post and Johnson’s header was cleared off his line by keeper Liam Roberts who scurried back. Johnson struck the base of the post with the rebound.

Dundas’ men levelled just before the hour. Jordan Flattley pinged a ball over the back four and Baker slotted home from a tight angle.

Walsall regained the lead when Cody Fisher’s header from a Will Shorrock corner went in off a Scholars’ defender.

Mitch Candlin made it 3-1 after an interception in midfield and slotted past Reaney.

Candlin added his second following up a rebound after Josh Allen saved initially.

The visitors added a fifth with Candlin’s hat trick goal pouncing on a defensive error and rounded Allen to slot into an empty net.

Muzzy Nduna hit the Walsall crossbar in the final minute – the third time Chasetown struck the frame of the goal.
