Lichfield Garrick Rep company’s production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? has been well-received by critics in the West End.

The show, which stars Matthew Kelly, began life at the Garrick but has now moved to the Trafalgar Studios in London.

The Guardian’s Lyn Gardner said in her review of the show:

“Matthew Kelly takes [his character] George by the scruff of the neck and gives him a damn good shake, revealing that it is his soul, not just his shirt, that is crushed and baggy.”

The Times also applauded the leading man’s performance. Their reviewer Dominic Maxwell said:

“Matthew Kelly continues his reinvention as a stage actor of note.”

The Stage added that the intimate venue was beneficial to the performance:

“This production magnifies in intensity by being presented with the audience in such close proximity to it.”
