Labour are banking on economic recovery, says Lichfield MP

Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant believes Gordon Brown is banking on an economic recovery to prevent a Conservative victory in the next General Election.

Many polls have indicated an almost unassailable Conservative lead, but Mr Fabricant believes their may be more twists and turns to come.

His comments came in an article written for The Birmingham Post on the same day the Government were dealt a blow as they were defeated in a vote on controversial plans regarding the settlement of Gurkhas in the UK.

However, while Mr Fabricant believes it is the economy which Gordon Brown is banking on to be Labour’s saving grace, he feels a recovery may be too far off to come to the Government’s aid.  He said:

“I do not subscribe to the school of thought that says it’s a shoe-in for the Conservatives.  Gordon Brown hasn’t waited this long to be Prime Minister to throw in the towel.

“Brown is hoping for is a resurgence in the economy before he has to call an election.  His continued narrative is ‘I saved the world while the Tories would do nothing’.  Despite the inaccuracy of that remark on both counts, it may have some traction if there any signs of recovery early in the first quarter of 2010.  Now economists tell me that is most unlikely and job loss totals are expected to rise way beyond the June 2010 deadline for an election. “
