Lichfield Cathedral plays host to Steve Simpson art exhibition

steve-simpson-exhibition-june-2009A display of digitally generated images, paintings, collages and reliefs by artist Steve Simpson are set to go on display at Lichfield Cathedral.

The ArtReach exhibition will run from the June 4-14 during Cathedral opening hours (weekdays 7.30am until 6.15pm, Saturdays 8am until 6.15pm and Sunday 7.30am until 6.30pm). Entrance is free of charge but donations are welcome.

The works in the exhibition have been selected from over 1,000 pieces. Most of the works are in small scale – a deliberate decision based on a solution to storage problems.

Canon Pete Wilcox, Canon Chancellor of Lichfield Cathedral said:

” When the ArtReach committee saw these images, we were immediately clear that we wanted to exhibit them.  The colours and design are so vibrant and fresh, they convey something of the zest which lies at the heart of the Christian faith: the sense that life is the gift of God’s grace, to be lived in gratitude and joy.  We are pleased that Steve has agreed to show his images in our Cathedral and hope our visitors will relish them.”

Steve trained as a printmaker at Wolverhampton and Chelsea. He taught in both Further and Higher Education retiring as Head of the School of Art at Wakefield College in 1996. In recent years he has worked mainly as a painter. He has been commissioned to produce work for a number of churches and is currently working on a commission for Polesworth Abbey in Warwickshire. He exhibits regularly in churches and cathedrals.

He moved back towards making printed multiple images using digital technology intending to move between painting, drawing and print in equal measure. However the fascination with process has seen the work produced on computer far out number work in other areas. The work has been ongoing since 2004 and at one stage became a daily discipline.
