A new retailer could be set to take on the former Woolworths store in Lichfield.

No permanent tenant has so far been found for the site, with only an electrical sales business occupying the premises on a short-term basis.

The uncertainty over the future of the area due to development plans has led to many major retailers – including Home Bargains, the company who have taken on several Woolworths stores across the country – ruling themselves out of taking on the prime location in Lichfield city centre.

But now Lichfield District Council Leader David Smith has said a deal with a new tenant is close to completion.

Cllr Smith told the Express & Star:

“We are in talks with a well known retailer at the moment, but I can’t reveal its identity as yet. We are hoping to sort out the lease agreement very shortly. We will be very pleased to get this sorted out. It would be a boost for the city centre.”
