Premier League referee Alan Wiley is set to kick-off a festival of football in Burntwood.

A celebratory festival of football for five to 13 year-olds is taking place at the Hammerwich Hospital Road football grounds on August 9, from 10am.

Lichfield District Council, in partnership with Hammerwich Parish Council, is holding the event to celebrate the official opening of a brand new pavilion at the grounds, which will be opened by top ref Alan.

The Burntwood Dragons will be looking after the under 8s – who will be playing football games on two mini soccer pitches.

Meanwhile, the junior pitch will see footie fans, age five to 13, having a go at panna football (played inside an inflatable ring), keep uppy competitions, target shooting, beat the keeper, speed gun challenges, as well as five-aside football games.

The District Council’s mobile leisure team will also be there on the day with a giant inflatable dinosaur! An ice cream van will also be fully stocked to make this a cool summer day.

The football fun and games will lead up to the pavilion grand opening at midday.

The £430,885 pavilion is complete with four changing rooms, an officials’ room, and a kitchen. Funding for the building came from the Football Foundation, who provided a grant of £230,885, and the Highways Agency – who funded £200,000 of the project to compensate for the loss of Jubilee Park – owing to the M6 Toll.

At 1pm Chasetown FC will take on Burntwood Dragons – with Alan refereeing the match.

Councillor Val Richards, Cabinet Member for Leisure Services, said:

“This festival is a wonderful way to celebrate this fantastic new pavilion. I am sure the many local football clubs, who are set to use the facility, will be impressed with it and will enjoy it for years to come.”

The festival is free, but places must be booked in advance and are on a first come first serve basis. To reserve your child’s place, please call Burntwood Leisure Centre on 01543 308810.
