The finishing touches are being put on the major refurbishment of Midlands Co-op’s Lichfield superstore.

The completion of the works will bring the overall investment in the store to almost £600,000 since January.

Less than six months after the Boley Park store was revamped, this latest work sees two additional express checkouts installed, extra chilled product space added to the fresh food departments, further improvements to the in-store bakery operation including visibility for customers of the baking activity, and a full makeover for the café.

The café has been given a more minimalist treatment in terms of décor including new tables and chairs. More emphasis has been placed on snacking products and the fixtures and fittings have been updated including a new floor and a refurbished counter area.

All the tea, coffee and hot chocolate served in the café are fairtrade further and the store has just been presented with a highly commended award in the Fairtrade category of the Lichfield Chamber of Trade and Commerce Awards which are voted for by local shoppers.

The additional improvements have been made to accommodate the increased trade that the store is experiencing following the initial refurbishment and feedback provided by customers.

Store Manager, Gary Brooks, said:

“The response we received to the initial refurbishment was fantastic to the point where we had to recruit an additional 45 members of staff to cope with increased trade. That in itself was excellent news at a time when many businesses have put a hold on recruitment. I’m sure that our customers will be as impressed with the improvements as we are and I look forward to hearing their comments. I’d like to thank everyone who voted for our store in the Chamber of Commerce awards. We are all very proud of our achievements and appreciate our customers’ support.”

Shopper Sonia Bennett from Lichfield said:

“The store has certainly improved in terms of both the products it stocks and the way it’s laid out. It is much brighter and I like the colourful pictures on the walls by the checkouts and in the café. I think that the store deserves to win the Lichfield Chamber of Trade and Commerce Award for its support of fairtrade as the range available is great and the prices are affordable even though we are all tightening our belts because of the credit crunch, It’s great that it doesn’t have to cost the earth to feel good about the products you buy.”

possibly a bit misleading to put all the increased trade down to the refurbishment, didn’t Tesco close 6 months ago?
