Lichfield MP “proud” to have helped Conservatives win by-election

Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant has admitted he is “proud” to have helped the Conservatives win the Norwich North by-election.

The contest was won by Tory candidate Chloe Smith in the seat vacated by Labour MP Ian Smith.

Mr Smith quit after the party barred him from standing again over his expenses claims.

But the Conservatives have taken full advantage after a strong campaign involving Mr Fabricant which saw Ms Smith pick up 13,591 votes. Labour’s Chris Ostrowski was second with 6,243 votes.

Mr Fabricant said:

“This is a stunning result overturning a respectable Labour majority, 5,469, with a hefty Conservative majority in excess of 7,000.  We fought a positive campaign on our policies.  This huge swing round was achieved despite a negative Labour campaign which lied about Conservative plans in an attempt to frighten voters in North Norwich. I am proud to have played a part in her election.”
