Lichfield Friary Tennis Club secure landmark promotion

tennisballandracquet pic: Kevin LauLichfield Friary Tennis Mens A team have made club history with promotion for the first time to the Wilson Staffordshire Premier One Division – the top league in the county.

Friary finished as runners-up to Florence (Stoke-On-Trent) on 33 points, just four points behind the team from the Potteries.

The final match of the season decided the second place spot as Friary played away against local rivals Etching Hill. Friary needed just one point to secure promotion and found the home side were on fire, but the single point was claimed.

Friary were promoted from Division One South last year and their adventure in Premier Two was club history for 2009. The leap into Premier One for the 2010 season is yet another milestone for the club.

Friary Mens A Team Captain Julian Fisher said:

“After countless years in Division One South, we rejoiced last year at gaining promotion to the Premier level and just wanted to consolidate our position, learning along the way. If you had asked me to comment on promotion at the start of this season I would have laughed it off.

“I think this year has been even more of an achievement. The 2009 season was new, a higher standard and we knew we wouldn’t always have the strongest team. We were very fortunate to have fielded a consistently good line-up team last year but during the 2009 season, mainly due to exams amongst some of our younger players, we relied upon some less experienced players. But everybody stepped up to the plate and surpassed all expectations.”

And despite promotion, Fisher believes the club could have achieved even more. He added:

“We only lost two matches during the season and if we had not dropped a few silly points we may have even been champions. But we have surprised many this year and now need to think about next year. It will be very tough so we need to train hard during the winter but at the moment everybody is just enjoying the achievement.”

The Mens A Team squad for 2009 were captain Fisher, James Morris, David Goss, Neil Egginton, Jack Knight, Sam Davies, Colin Densham and Dan Hathaway.
