Elderly people are being invited to a coffee and cake afternoon by Lichfield firefighters to celebrate International Day of Older Persons.

The evenet is taking place on Thursday (October 1), between 10am and 12pm at Lichfield Library at The Friary.

Visitors will be treated to coffee and cakes and they will get to speak to firefighters about fire safety in their homes to help keep them safe this winter.

The event co-incides with the launch of the Service’s latest campaign – Young at Heart, Safe at Home – which is about getting the fire safety message across to both the elderly people and those who come into contact with them.

The campaign is being driven by the fact that all five fire deaths in the County since the start of the year have involved elderly people – one of which was during a house fire in Peter’s Walk in Lichfield in January.

Lichfield Risk Reduction Officer, Carmel Warren explained:

“Elderly and vulnerable people are our prime target audience – it is our priority to ensure that they are safe from fire in their homes. This is an excellent opportunity for us to pass on important fire safety information and promote our home fire risk check service ready for the winter months. It’s also going to be a great social event for the guests who will be able to meet new people in the area and interact with them over coffee and cake!”
