Chasetown FC Reserves 4 Stone Dominoes 0

Blustry conditions at the Scholars Ground made life difficult for both sides in the early exchanges of their Staffs Challenge Cup encounter.

Combined with a week’s lay off, the conditions contributed to the Chasetown team taking a while to settle against their Staffs County League Division One opponents.

Whilst always looking the stronger team, it took until the stroke of half time for the home side to take the lead with Matty Elwell stroking the ball home from just inside the penalty area.

Chasetown began the second half much more positively, with the home defence lead by the experienced Aide Smith playing the ball out from defence with some confidence. But despite this the Scholars could still not take any of the several chances created, whilst Stone Dominoes still struggled to really create any clear cut chances to test Fryer in the Chasetown goal.

A double substitution on 57 minutes which saw Dave Webster and Dan Mason replaced by Jordan Tams and Tom Maydew allowed Chasetown to try and push on.

And the Scholars got their rewards eight minutes later when a corner from Daniel Rock allowed Jack Scandrett to volley home suberbly from the edge of the box to make the score 2-0.

But Scandrett’s afternoon soured as he picked up an injury and was replaced by Alex Fletcher on 68 minutes.

Stone Dominoes enjoyed their only attack of note on 70 minutes when a missed tackle on the edge of the box by a Chasetown defender resulted in right back Tom Maydew trying to retrieve the situation but he could only trip the oncoming Stone forward, giving the referee no option to award the visitors a penalty.

Despite a well struck spot kick towards the left hand corner of the net, Chasetown goalkeeper James Fryer produced a wonderful stop to prevent Stone regaining a foothold in the game.

And Chasetown were soon back in their rythmn with further goals from Tom Billingham on 73 minutes and a fine through ball from Jordan Tams gave Alex Fletcher the chance to score Chasetown’s fourth goal on 75 minutes.

The next action for Chasetown Reserves sees them take on Oadby Town Reserves in the first round of the Midland Combination League Challenge Bowl on October 10 (kick-off 3pm).

Chasetown: Fryer, Webster, Jamie Elwell, Smith (c), Hulin, Ivers, Scandrett, Billingham, Matthew Elwell, Mason, Rock. Subs: Tams (Mason, 57 mins), Vassallo, Maydew (Webster, 57 mins), Hyden, Fletcher (Scandrett, 68 mins).
