Lincoln United FC 1 Chasetown FC 2

New signing Reece Styche made a dream debut for Chasetown as they overcame Lincoln United 2-1 in the FA Trophy.

Styche could not have got off to a better start for the Scholars, as a goal kick from Ryan Price bounced over the Lincoln defence and the former Shepshed man lobbed the ball over Mario Ziccardi for his first Scholars goal after just three minutes.

Ten minutes later United striker Sean Cann fired a shot just wide despite having lost a boot, before Styche impressed again with a good run into the area but this time Ziccardi palmed his shot away for a corner, and a one-to-one with the keeper then came to nothing.

Cann then went close once again for the home side and Mark Branch sent a free kick wide after Gary Birch had been pushed in the back by Ian Hawkins, before the home side drew level on 27 minutes. Cann sent a cross into the area from the goal line, and while the Scholars appealed for a goal kick Matt O’Halloran smashed the ball home.

Richard Batchelor was also impressing for Chasetown and had three chances, the third cleared by Hawkins with the keeper beaten, while Richard Teesdale hit the woodwork following a Ben Steane free kick. Price was able to collect O’Halloran’s free kick at the end of the half, and the Scholars were able to reflect on a positive performance going into the break.

Three minutes into the second half the Scholars were back in front as Vaughan Thomas rose to meet Steane’s free kick and the ball crept in off his shoulder at the far post.

Styche was continuing to impress on his Scholars debut, displaying some neat play with Birch and Batchelor, the latter firing over the bar with only the keeper to beat on the hour.

The hosts produced a neat move down the right courtesy of Terry Fleming, but Batchelor was able to clear, and with ten minutes on the clock Price made an excellent diving save to deny an equaliser. Chasetown’s lively attitude continued as they closed out the game to set up a visit to Lancaster City in the next round on October 17.

The Scholars are in action again on Tuesday (October 6) as they host Witton Albion (7.45pm kick-off).
