Heart FM presenter and former Cub Ed James will be cutting the ribbon at the official opening of the first new Scout Headquarters to be built in the Lichfield district for more than 20 years.
The 6th Lichfield Scout Group raised £240,000 to build their new HQ, replacing a wooden hut, formerly used by the RAF, which had stood on the site in Christchurch Lane since 1960.
Popular breakfast show DJ Ed James jumped at the chance to take part in the ceremony, being held on Saturday (October 17), because he had such fond memories of being a cub himself.
“What the 6th Lichfield Scout Group has achieved is quite amazing and will benefit young people in Lichfield for decades to come. I loved every minute of being a cub. I’m just a bit worried that they might test me on my cub scout skills. It’s a long time since I got my badges!”
The new Scout Headquarters attracted a £100,000 grant from Lichfield District Council under its Section 106 scheme which allocated money given by developers as part of the planning process in the city. The grant underpinned a fundraising drive that raised the remaining £140,000.
The Mayor of Lichfield and the District Scouting Commissioner will be among other guests at the grand opening, as will current Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and their parents.
Former Scout Group members and their parents are also being invited along to the occasion – and the parents of children who might want to join.
Group Scout Leader Neil Cordes said:
“This is a fantastic moment for us and we want to share it with as many current and former friends as possible. This new Headquarters will help us ensure Scouting remains popular in Lichfield for many years to come.”
The open day starts at 2pm and in includes refreshments, a hog roast and fun stalls. For more information about the opening day, please call the 6th Lichfield Scout Group on 07950 327845.
