A pilot scheme launched to bring help to vulnerable Lichfield families has enjoyed instant success.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has teamed up with the County Mobile Library Unit on tours of the district’s rural communities, seeking out people who may struggle to access the help they need.
On the first trip out, Risk Reduction Manager at Lichfield Fire Station, Carmel Warren, found 14 properties in need of urgent Home Fire Safety Checks.
Carmel advised people on the potential hazards and dangers which may lurk in their home. She also identified one resident with even greater needs.
She explained:
“The first tour was around Fradley Village where we completed six stops in four hours. I took a total of 14 Home Fire Risk Check referrals which was great. Only one home had adequate smoke detection, some people didn’t realise they need a working smoke alarm on all floors of their property.
“With one person’s consent I have made a referral to Social Care and Health as I feel they needed additional support.”
The second tour is on November 4 around Lichfield city centre with another tour planned on November 6 in Armitage and Handsacre.
County Councillor and Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, Ben Adams said:
