Lichfield RUFC’s game against Ashbourne RUFC fell victim to the weather in controversial circumstances.

The Myrtle Greens had been going through their warm-up when their opponents decide that they were unhappy with the playing surface.

Lichfield skipper Dave Bassett explained that Ashbourne’s viewpoint took the decision out of his team’s hands.

He said:

“The referee is not involved in decisions on the pitch until the game has started, beforehand it is down to the teams and if one side is not happy the game cannot go ahead.

“We are obviously extremely disappointed with this outcome as we felt that the pitch was clearly playable.

“This postponed fixture does nothing to help our fixture list which is already backing up.”
