The Lichfield Garrick has been chosen to stage the debut of a play based on the songs, loves and lives of Al Jolson and Frank Sinatra.
Ain’t no Angels, devised by Ken Wragg, will be presented by professional company Role-Play Productions.
Ken Wragg has been music director for over 100 productions, worked in cabaret with such names as Dicky Henderson and Bernie Winters and has done musical arrangements for cabaret and radio.
Some of the area’s noted actors and singers feature in the show. Paul Roberts, best known in Lichfield for his appearances at the Lichfield Proms in Beacon Park and as a member of Bella Musica, features as Al Jolson.
Paul Lumsden, who has taken lead roles in local operatic society productions and also has his own professional cabaret act, plays Frank Sinatra.
The versatile Craig Allen, another leadling light in the region’s amateur theatre companies, will don many guises as he weaves his way through the stories revealing the lives of the two famous singers.
Two of Lichfield Operatic Society’s principal performers, Ruth Harvey and Jo McAllister, feature as the women in the lives of the two famous stars. We’ll see Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, Ruby Keeler and Mia Farrow, among others.
Ruth trained at Birmingham School of Speech and Drama and has toured in with professional companies. Jo is a passionate performer, having worked her way up from the chorus to take leading roles with several amateur musical companies.
Ain’t no Angels features some of Jolson and Sinatra’s most famous songs, including Jolson’s April Showers, Swanee, I’m Sitting on Top of the World and Sonny Boy and Sinatra’s I’ve Got You Under My Skin, Somethin’ Stupid, Lady is a Tramp and Have You Met Miss Jones?
Be prepared for a dynamic start, emotional and gripping twists, lots of humour and an upbeat finale.
Role-Play Productions would like to thank Lichfield Costume Hire to help with costumes.
