Women urged to sign up for fundraising Solstice Walk in Lichfield

Women are being reminded to sign up for a fundraising walk in Lichfield in aid of a Whittington hospice.

And St Giles Hospice is making it even easier for people to take part in this year’s Solstice Walk, by offering participants the chance to pay through PayPal.

And the very first person to take advantage of the new system, mum-of-two Sarah Dennis, is urging more people to use the easy payment method to guarantee their place at the hotly-anticipated fundraising event on June 19.

Sarah, 34, from Leomansley, Lichfield , said:

“PayPal is a great way to pay for things online and I use it regularly, so it was only natural that I chose the PayPal option when I signed up for the Solstice Walk via the St Giles website. It’s much safer and more convenient than inputting your card numbers again and again and the money is deducted straight from your account.”

The 2010 St Giles Hospice Solstice Walk is sponsored by the UK prepared salad specialist Florette, based in Lichfield, and gets under way in Lichfield city centre at 10pm on June 19.

This year’s event sees a return to the popular theme of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with walkers encouraged to dress up in fairy wings, enchanting fancy dress and waving magic wands.

It will be the third Solstice Walk for Sarah, who lives with her husband and their six-year-old daughter and four-year-old son, and she will be taking part in memory of her late grandmother, who received care from the hospice during her final days.

The full-time mum is busy recruiting as many friends as she can to join her for the high-spirited occasion, with the intention of raising as much money as possible through sponsorship for St Giles.

She explained:

“St Giles means a lot to me because of the care my grandmother received, and my mum spent some time volunteering as a driver for the hospice. It’s great to get the chance to support a local charity and have a giggle at the same time. Having been on the Solstice Walk before, I know how amazing the atmosphere is going to be – and I’m looking forward to getting dressed up in my fairy costume again!”

Solstice Walk participants can choose to complete one 4.5-mile circuit of the city or two laps for the full nine-mile course. Although the event is open to women aged 16 and over only, men are encouraged to get involved by volunteering as stewards.

Entry is £15 per walker and everyone who signs up will receive a Solstice Walk sponsorship pack, which includes fundraising ideas, training tips and details of how they can raise additional funds through sponsorship.

Every penny of the proceeds is spent on hospice care for local people living with cancer and other serious illnesses, and the Solstice Walk has raised nearly £300,000 since it was first held in 2007.
