Cadbury Athletic Reserves 1 Lichfield City FC 6

New signing Dean Watkiss found the back of the net four times on his Lichfield City FC debut as Dean Gilbert’s men recorded a 6-1 victory over Cadbury Athletic Reserves.

Watkiss, who signed from Midland Alliance outfit Rocester, was joined on the scoresheet by Simon Deeley and Danny Worrall as City bounced back from back-to-back defeats in real style.

Gilbert also gave a debut to Adam Eccles as he rang the changes in an effort to get his City side back on track.

They were given the perfect start when Watkiss cooly slotted the ball home for his first goal in City colours.

That lead was doubled moments later when he latched on to a keeper Dan Edwards’ long punt down field to lift the ball over the stranded Cadbury keeper.

Deeley then converted a penalty to put the game beyond the hosts before Worrall made it 4-0.

Cadbury pulled a goal back on the hour mark before Watkiss completed his hat-trick from the spot after Deeley was this time upended.

The debutant rounded off an excellent afternoon’s work with his fourth – and City’s sixth – in the 88th minute to leave Gilbert purring.

The Lichfield boss said:

“Every player put a shift in. Adam Eccles had a great debut as, of course, did Dean Watkiss. He formed the perfect partnership with Jon Rob Dutton. We used Jon as the target man, a role which he excels in, and had Dean playing off him.

“The goals he scored were a credit to the work both of them put in. It would have been easy for us to go to Cadbury and play for the draw. We had a couple of poor performances going into the fixture and I was worried that we had hit a point in the season where the lads were tired and were lacking in confidence all over the field.

“We changed things round a bit and brought in a couple of fresh faces and it has done us the world of good.”

City travel to Greenhill on Wednesday (March 24) evening before entertaining Hampton at Brownsfield Park on Saturday (March 27) – kick-off 3pm.
