Martyn Cheatle, joined the Lichfield-based company as Head of Finance in 2001 before being appointed Deputy Chief Executive in 2005, and takes up the role following the retirement of John Fitzgerald.

His career in Accounting and Finance began in the late 1970s when he held a series of positions the Bass Group.  In the early 1990s his career took him to Wales in the role of Management Accountant, followed by time as Chief Accountant in Birmingham and subsequently Financial Controller for Bass Brewers in Burton-on-Trent .  He joined Gala Leisure in 1996 as Finance Director and was instrumental to the delivery of significant improvements in operating profits during his five years with the company.

Mr Cheatle said:

“I step into this role at a time when our Society is in a strong position, in spite of the challenging economic conditions, thanks to our strategy for growth, financial stability and co-operative brand values, which are striking a chord with today’s consumer.  We are well placed to continue to invest and grow, organically and through acquisition, across all trading businesses.  I am looking forward to developing our position as a strong independent society, serving local members and communities, and to working with other co-operatives to the benefit and strengthen the movement in general.

“Central to the co-operative ethos is the importance of every member contributing to the success of the endeavour for mutual benefit.  We will continue to put this into practice through engagement with our stakeholders and the communities in which we trade, as well as heavy investment in our people so that we can deliver a true point of difference.”
