Event gives older people in Lichfield a chance to try new activities

Older people in Lichfield are being given the chance to try out new activities in the city.

bowlsKing Edward VI Leisure Centre will host the free 50 Plus Health and Wellbeing Day on April 6 from 10am to 2pm, and will offer people the chance to try things such as aerobics, badminton, racquetball, short mat bowls and a tea dance.

Free refreshments will be served throughout the day to keep everyone’s energy up, and there will be a free buffet lunch from 12 noon to 12.30pm.

The event is also an opportunity for older people to find out useful information from lots of local agencies who will be exhibiting at the event. These include:

  • South Staffs Housing Association
  • Police Community Support
  • Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service
  • Women’s Royal Voluntary Service
  • South Staffs Primary Care Trust
  • Age Concern.

The event will also feature Sloppy Slippers – the partnership campaign that aims to prevent elderly people tripping over their old slippers by replacing them with a brand new pair for just £1.50.

Councillor Val Richards, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure Services, said:

“Come along to our free 50 Plus Health and Well Being Day. It’s an opportunity to try your hand at lots of activities to see whether you want to take them up. Fitness experts from our leisure centres, including King Edward VI, Friary Grange and Burntwood leisure centres, will be on hand to talk to you about the classes you’re interested in, and when they are running.

“The day is also a great opportunity to find out more about local agencies and to pick up a new pair of slippers for just £1.50.”

What a great idea. Sports such as short mat bowls are a great social activity and are often overlooked as a way to get out and meet new people. Hopefully the opportunity to get involved for free will encourage more people to have a go!
