Thefts lead to withdrawal of car battery recycling facility in Burntwood

A Burntwood waste centre has been forced to stop accepting car batteries for recycling after a spate of thefts.

Thieves have repeatedly targeted the centre on Ring Road and have forced Staffordshire County Council, who operate the facility, to stop taking new batteries.

County Councillor Robert Marshall, Cabinet member for Infrastructure and Regeneration, said:

“It is a real shame that this valuable facility has had to be removed because of the actions of a few selfish people.  I hope that their behaviour will not put people off from recycling in the future.

“There are two facilities fairly nearby and I would encourage people to continue to do their bit for the environment and use them instead.”

Residents are now being asked to take their car batteries to the recycling centres at Lichfield Road in Cannock and Trent Valley Road in Lichfield.
