Old Yardleians RUFC 13 Burntwood RUFC 23

Old Yardleians away has rarely proved a happy hunting ground for Burntwood in recent league encounters but, inspired by Matt Wood who contributed 18 points, they finally enjoyed success.

They were presented with the ideal start when the opening kick off failed to travel 10 metres. From the resulting scrum, Wood ghosted through the home defence for the first try of the game.

Graham Shelley’s men continued to dominate play for the next 20 minutes and Wood kicked two penalties to take the score to 11-0. The referee was strict on the defence line at rucks for both sides and the game degenerated into a stalemate for the rest of the half.

Old Yards took advantage of the penalties awarded to them, converting one to make the half time score 11-3.

The hosts kept the ball tight to their forwards after the restart to enjoy long spells of possession which frustrated the visitors. When Burntwood did have the chance to play they recycled the ball too slowly to make an impact.

During this period of home dominance, Old Yards scored a converted try by breaking from a ruck to the blind side. They were also successful with one of three kickable penalty attempts to take the lead and the match seemed to be following previous scripts.

However, in the final 20 minutes Burntwood moved the ball away from the forwards and that man Wood again sliced his way through the defence without a finger laid on him to regain the lead.

The final try of the game was scored by Liam Lloyd in the left corner after excellent handling by the backs. Wood added the conversion from the touchline.
