Burntwood RUFC Development XV 26 Eccleshall 5

Burntwood RUFC’s Development XV entertained an Eccleshall XV at The Sportsway and came out on top of a 26-5 scoreline.

Within five minutes of the kick off, the visitors lost a winger due to injury so Steve Pearce was loaned and 17 year old Mason came on for Burntwood. Shortly afterwards the hosts were ahead.

An Eccleshall kick was returned by Sam Cotter from full back. A series of passes found Ash Stanton up in good support and he went in for the try. Martin Ottey converted.

The second try also began from deep. Sam Corbett started it with a break out of his own 22. A bout of inter-passing ended with Chris Preston putting Mitch Adams in for the score to make it 12-0 at the break.

After re-shuffling their half backs and full back, Burntwood took a while to settle after the turnaround and Eccleshall took advantage with their bigger pack mauling over for a try.

A charge down by Corbett set up Burntwood’s 3rd try. After executing a perfect forward roll he popped the ball up for Cotter to score and Ottey to convert.

Skipper Andy Dodd initiated the final score by taking a difficult catch over his head, shimmying his way into space and providing possession for his backs. The ball found Nick Peplow who flew in round behind the posts for Ottey to convert.

Cotter, Corbett and Matt Lee all impressed and so did Hal Gozukucuk once he had cooled off in the sin bin.

The Development XV are away to Linley on Saturday (April 10th) and the 3rds are away to Warley 2nds.
