A comical du0 of ‘tipsy tipplers’ are set to take time out on to raise a toast to good old England and Saint George.

The pair are Shakespearian tinker Christopher Sly and the ‘King of Cool’ Dean Martin, alias Lichfield actors Ken Knowles and Craig Allen.

They are promoting their respective plays – Shakespeare in the Park’s The Taming of the Shrew and Role-Play Productions’ Ain’t No Angels.

In Taming of the Shrew, Ken plays a drunken tinker, Christopher Sly, and Dean Martin, who also liked a drink, is just one of the characters Craig plays in Ain’t No Angels.

Members of both groups will be at Lichfield’s usual Friday Market on St George’s Day, Friday April 23, on Market Square, telling folks all about their productions.

Ken said:

“Taming of the Shrew opens when the poor tinker becomes the target of a prank by a Lord. Sly is drunk out of his wits and the Lord convinces him that he is a Lord with a wife (played by Ben Cole)…in reality his ‘wife’ is a page suitably dressed.

“Before Sly gets to spend time alone with his wife a troupe of players turn up and perform the main story of The Taming of the Shrew. Sly watches the play in a drunken stupor saying little other than a few interruptions.”

Craig added:

“I’m thoroughly enjoying playing lots of interesting characters in Ain’t no Angels. I get to act and sing as Dean Martin, who was a major star of stage and screen.”

The Taming of the Shrew, SITP’s 28th open-air production, is at Maple Hayes, Lichfield, from June 16 to 19. Tickets from Lyn Baker on 01543 254808 or details online at www.SITP.org.uk.

Ain’t No Angels, a play with music about the lives and loves of Al Jolson and Frank Sinatra, is at the Lichfield Garrick on May 11 and 12. Tickets from the box office on 01543 412121 or online at www.lichfieldgarrick.com.
