Award-winning Lichfield businesses are set to pick up their gongs from a former British military chief.

General Sir Mike Jackson has been confirmed as the presenter of the Lichfield Chamber of Trade and Commenrce’s Awards for Excellence in Business event.

The former Chief of Defence Staff for the British Armed Forces will host the glittering ceremony on July 6 at the Lichfield Garrick.

Eleven awards will be given out across categories including Best Fairtrade Business and Best New Business. All the awards are voted for by local customers. A special Best In Business award will be presented to the company that receives the most votes across all categories.

People can pick up a voting form from local shops have their say online at before May 22.

Richard Lewis, President of Lichfield’s Chamber of Trade & Commerce, said:

“These awards are a great way to show your support and appreciation for your favourite local businesses – from shops, to bars, to community venues. Winning such a prestigious award is a great boost for local businesses, especially in today’s financial climate. Winners and runners up can display their award winning status on their marketing material to help them stand out from the crowd. So, support your local business and get voting!”

The awards evening will begin with a presentation by General Sir Mike Jackson at 7.30pm.  This will be followed by the presentation of the awards, after which the military man will host a Q&A session.

“We are delighted to be hosting the awards again this year. We were proud winners of the best entertainment and arts attraction last year, which has been great for our business. We look forward to hosting lots of local businesses at the event in July.”

The award categories are:

  • Best business supporting Fairtrade
  • Best customer service in an independent shop
  • Best customer service in a national chain store
  • Best customer service at a professional firm (e.g. solicitors, banks, accountants, dentists etc)
  • Best new business (less than two years old)
  • Best café or restaurant – daytime
  • Best restaurant – evening
  • Best pub or bar
  • Best entertainment or arts attraction in Lichfield
  • Best support in the community (e.g. leisure centre, local club, magazine, etc)
  • Best beauty, hair or nail salon
