Two Lichfield gardeners are hanging up their trowels after working at Beacon Park for a combined total of 95 years.

Dave Coton from Hammerwich and Vic Sones from Alrewas retired from Lichfield District Council on May 4.

Dave  started as an apprentice when he was just 15 and has clocked up 51 years with tending to Beacon Park, while Vic began his career in 1966.

And they admit leaving their spades and secateurs behind will be difficult. Dave explained:

“We’re both really sorry to go as we’ve loved our time working at Beacon Park. It’s amazing how many people have been coming up to us to say they will miss us, as they have grown used to asking us their gardening questions. We’ll both miss working at Beacon Park, but hope to carry on working part time.”

Councillor Louise Flowith, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Operational Services, said:

“I would like to thank Dave Coton and Vic Sones for all their hard work, and wish them the very best of luck after their many years of dedicated service.”
