Michael Fabricant has regained his seat in Lichfield after an emphatic general election victory.
The Conservative MP picked up 28,048 votes to record 54.4 per cent of the votes.
Liberal Demorat candidate Ian Jackson beat Labour into second by scooping 10,365 votes as Steve Hyden could only win 10,230 votes. UKIP’s Karen Maunder registered 2,920 votes.
The margin of victory shocked even the winning candidate who has held the Lichfield constituency since 1997.
In 2005 he recorded 21,274 votes, beating Labour into second with 14,194, while the Liberal Democrats polled 6,804.
The Lichfield count took place at King Edward VI Leisure Centre and saw 75 counters complete their work ahead of schedule at around 2.30am.
And even some of Mr Fabricant’s supporters were shocked by the scale of the victory when the result was read out:
But there’s no great celebration on the cards, with the Conservative MP joking he would be “going to bed” after a long night and even longer campaign.
