Student cookery book takes centre stage at Lichfield event

Lichfield families are being invited to cook up a tasty treat using a recipe book created by students in the city.

North Lichfield Initiative is organising the free two-day Simply Cooking event where local residents can try their hand at cooking cheap eats.

The recipes used come from the Simply Cooking book created by a team of ten year 12 Friary School pupils, who won Company of the Year in the Young Enterprise Local Area Final and came second at the county finals.

A cookery session will take place at the Jigsaw Shop (Dimbles Lane) on June 5 from 2pm to 4pm. Sessions will also take place June 6 from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm.

Tracy Potts, Lichfield District Council’s Community Development Worker, said:

“We took Simply Cooking’s book as our inspiration as it is full of recipes to help people buying and preparing food on a tight budget. It has lots of simple but delicious recipes, and we’re all really impressed that it was developed and created by a group of local enterprising school pupils. We will be giving a free copy of the Simply Cooking cookery book to everyone who comes along to the sessions, so families can create its fantastic recipes at home together.”

North Lichfield Initiative’s community gardening group will also be on hand at the sessions to help locals to plant herbs and seeds in plant pots. These can then be taken away to add flavour to home cooking.

Robert Meehan Butchers will be offering 10 per cent off to everyone who takes part on one of the cooking sessions.

Tracy added:

“We’re sure good quality meat and homegrown herbs will make cooking creations taste even better. It’s really important to support the local economy, so this event will also be promoting Think Local, a scheme which asks local people to shop and buy local produce.”

All the ingredients will be provided on the day. To book your place on the one and a half hour sessions, call Jigsaw on 01543 253666 or pop in to the Jigsaw shop on Dimbles Lane.
