Warning to Lichfield and Burntwood shoppers over bank card thefts

Shoppers in Lichfield and Burntwood are being warned after a rise in bank card thefts at supermarkets across Staffordshire.

Offenders are watching customers enter their PIN numbers at self-service check-outs and then using distraction methods to steal the cards.

These can include asking for change, directions on a map or even letting down a car tyre then offering to help change it. Victims targeted tend to be older people.

Detective Constable Neil Powell said:

“There has been a noticeable increase in this type of crime across the county and we want to alert people to the danger of being targeted. When entering your PIN number on any keypad, cover it so that no-one else can see. Also, be wary if you are approached by strangers and keep any valuables, including cards, wallets and purses out of reach and in your possession at all times. It is best to secure them in zipped up pockets or handbags.”

Anyone with information on this type of crime can call Staffordshire Police on 0300 123 44 55, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
