Lichfield and Burntwood residents warned over roof cleaning firms

A warning has been issued to Lichfield and Burntwood residents after a series of complaints about roof cleaning companies across Staffordshire.

Companies who jet-wash and paint roof tiles have been cold-calling residents claiming that they need essential work carrying out, but investigations have shown that people are being overcharged for work which often does not need doing.

In one case in the north of the county, a couple in their 80s were left with a bill for £11,000 for cleaning work on their roof, guttering and windows – and the work has left them with a leaking roof.

Another incident saw a resident quoted £3,500 to clean a roof of moss. After a surveyor visited the homeowner was told any work was not needed and would only be cosmetic.

Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, Ben Adams, said:

“These companies are charging a huge amount of money for work that simply does not need doing. People could have their whole roof retiled for less money.

“We’d like to make people aware of how these companies operate and not to agree to have any work done on their homes without seeking professional advice.”

The warning comes during Operation Rogue Trader, a national month of action where Trading Standards officers and police have joined forces to target a range of offenders and highlight the biggest problems in the region. People can report concerns about rogue traders or cold-callers to Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.
